Interesting point I stumbled upon in preparing this year's revision of "Mitral Regurgitation" for Griffith's 5-minute Clinical Consult (which I readily admit that some of you may have already known).
If you have a patient with chronic severe mitral regurgitation with normal LV function (EF>60%), and they develop new atrial fibrillation, they are a strong candidate for mitral valve repair.
What to do if the patient has moderate mitral regurgitation and they develop atrial fibrillation? I have not yet found specific guidelines, but personally, this would potentially warrant a cardiology consult in my mind.
